11 May Top 10 Most Original Restaurants in London
The usual fish and chip hut is not really your cup of tea? London is well known for its innovative style, diversity and culture. It’s full of original, quirky restaurants, full of fun themes and vibey atmosphere. We’re sure that by the end of our ‘Top 10 Most Original Restaurants in London’, you’ll feel inspired, but if still not, give us a call, we’ll find something out of the ordinary for you!
1- Get into the Circus for one night
Circus is a Pan-Asian restaurant where you can drink a cocktail in a cabaret and look at the dancers taking the stage at your very own table. Not only is this place quirky because of the circus ambiance, but also the gastronomic food makes the restaurant one of the most original places in London. It is advisable to make a reservation, since this place gets fully booked really fast!
Closed on Sunday.
2- Focus on the taste: Dans le Noir?
At Dans le Noir (In the Dark), you will enjoy your dinner in the dark, as if you were totally blind. You will eat gastronomic food as you try to focus on the taste, the smell and the texture. The menu is simple, giving you the choice between Red, Blue, Green or White (meat, fish, vegetarian and chef’s recommendation). A must-see in London that you’ll never forget.
3- Taste the whole world: Archipelago
This restaurant should probably be top of the list for its food diversity, literally: Ranging from crocodile, garlic crickets to scorpions, this spot has the entire fauna on its menu. The burlesque decor is almost as original as the menu. We can almost guarantee you will have a unique experience at Archipelago, but you will most probably never eat kangaroo again.
Closed on Sunday.
4- Magical night at the Opera? Head to Bel Canto!
The Bel Canto is an Opera-restaurant. The waiters and waitresses are professional Opera singers, performing a unique vocal interpretation while bringing you your meal.
Originally a French restaurant, if you head to Paris you’ll be able to go back, as it was first located in the city of lights.
French gastronomy, opera singers and professional pianists. What better option for a romantic date in London?
Closed on Sunday and Tuesday.
5- The Absolute Must-See: Sketch
A place of decadence. If you want to try a cucumber/avocado cocktail in a place like never before, Sketch is the place to be.
Not only does Sketch have the most incredible toilets in the world (the notorious egg-toilets), but also the gastronomical and original food makes this restaurant one of the most original upscale restaurants in London. We don’t want to spoil the experience, so no more words from us, just try it.
6- Get lost in La Bodega Negra
You will need to enter through a sex shop before getting inside this restaurant. Don’t worry it’s normal. Then, a waiter will ask you about your reservation and you will enter a sort of cave, crowded by people. Finally, you will be seated at a table where you will enjoy a unique Mexican cuisine. Unfortunately, you will not be able to enjoy La Bodega Negra for more than two hours, because of the huge reservation list, but you can still go to the bar afterwards to enjoy a cocktail and/or a shot of tequila.
7- The Royal Experience: Rules
This is London’s oldest restaurant. We’re not entirely sure, but Eduard VII may have had a meal here a long time ago.
You won’t listen to music, drink a beer or have a coffee but you will be able to taste the old British gastronomy that is now forgotten, alongside an excellent cocktail obviously.
The place looks like an old castle and you will feel like going back in time for a few hours in Rules.
Reservations are recommended.
8- The Tube restaurant: Basement Gallery
This restaurant is based in an old tube and it is inspired from the french brasseries from the 1970s. You can also have a delicious cocktail or beer here. The Head-Chef Alex Cooper has extensive culinary experience, having worked in the biggest restaurants of London, such as Sketch or La Belle Assiette. You will never look at the tube the same way after having had dinner in the Basement Gallery.
Closed on Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday.
9- WC Dinner: Attendant
Have a dinner in an old public toilet from the XIXth century might not sound very appealing. But it’s not exactly what you will get at the Attendant. Its convivial and affordable range will definitely make you forget about its original use 200 years ago. It is currently above the ground and it’s often crowded on midday, so you should definitely make a reservation.
10- Sarastro, an Oriental expedition!
This is a Turkish-mediterranean restaurant in Covent Garden, whose decoration is flamboyant and opulent. Every box where you can sit at a table has a unique style (either Rococo, Gothic, etc). You might think it’s kitschy, but trust us, you’ll enjoy every second of your experience. Every Sunday you can have your dinner while watching an Opera show at the Sarastro and every Tuesday a Motown show is being put on.
Tell us if you’ve tried any of these quirky restaurants and what did you think of it! Of course, there are so many more original restaurants in London and with FG Properties, we can find you the perfect apartment near one of these restaurants for you to have the best trip in London!
